Botox® may still rule when it comes to non-invasive treatments, but there’s a popular type of treatment hot on its heels: dermal fillers. Want to know why these powerful injections are such a fast-growing segment of the cosmetic treatment industry? They’re quick, easy, affordable, and most importantly, versatile.
What Are Dermal Fillers?
Dermal fillers may be made up of all kinds of formulas, but the most common is the hyluronic acid gel filler, a synthetic version of a naturally-occurring substance in the skin. Some other formulas are made of non-allergenic poly-l-lactic acid or calcium-hydroxylapatite (CaHA) micro-spheres. Dermal fillers are most well-known for reducing wrinkles on a temporary basis, but they have other uses as well. Fillers are an injectable treatment requiring no downtime. While some fillers require allergy testing before they can be administered, others are hypo-allergenic and require no testing.
Fillers for Wrinkle Reduction
The most common use for dermal fillers is wrinkle reduction. While Botox® is popular for treating “dynamic” wrinkles (wrinkles caused by years of repetitive facial movement), dermal fillers work best for “static” wrinkles and fine lines. Most fillers are gel formulas which actively fill in the wrinkles for a duration of about six to 12 months, depending on the filler. Over that time, the body gradually breaks down the filler. In order to keep up the results, new injections are required as needed.
Fillers for Facial Augmentation
Recently, fillers have been used for augmentation purposes. Last year, Juvederm released a new product called JuvedermVoluma XC which is specially formulated to help augment the cheek area. This can help compensate for age-related facial volume loss, and the results can last for up to two years.
Another common augmentation use for fillers is in lip augmentation. Fillers can provide temporary volume and definition to the lips or help restore youthfulness to the area.
Some plastic surgeons use dermal fillers to make improvements to the nose in what’s known as a “non-surgical” or “5-minute” nose job. These results still need to be refreshed every few months, making it a less-desirable option for people seeking long-term solutions. This procedure must be performed by a facial plastic surgeon for safety and results.
The injection process for most fillers is almost the same, and it’s very simple and easy. The doctor administering the injection will plan out his or her course of action, sometimes marking significant points on the face to be treated. The skin will most likely be numbed with ice or ice packs, anesthetic ointment, or local anesthetic before the injection is administered. The discomfort from the injection is tolerable, and patients can resume normal activities right away, although there may be slight redness, swelling and/or bruising at the injection site for a day or so after treatment.
Many Safe, Convenient and Accessible Options
The dermal filler market has exploded in the last few years, with many new FDA-approved products entering the market. Because of this, there are many different options to suit every need and budget. The number of choices can be overwhelming, but you don’t need to worry about which filler to choose. It is usually best to talk to a qualified provider who offers a number of options to help you make the decision. He or she will have the knowledge and experience to recommend the best filler for you.
Be Safe, Not Sorry
Even though dermal fillers are administered using a simple injection process, there is still plenty of room for error in the treatment. At best, a botched injection can cause aesthetic problems, at worst, more serious complications. Fortunately, this is nearly always avoidable by choosing a qualified dermatologist or plastic surgeon to administer your treatment. These health professionals have the skill, training, knowledge, and experience to give you excellent, safe results with the dermal filler of your choice.
