We all want to look younger, and we want to achieve that goal as quickly and easily as possible with no downtime and at an affordable price. Sound impossible? Not quite. There’s a reason botulinum toxin injections are so common, and it’s because they meet all the criteria outlined above. As a testament to the popularity of this type of treatment, there are now three different brands of botulinum toxin treatments: Botox®, Dysport, and Xeomin. But what makes them different from one another, and which one is right for you?
How Botulinum Toxin Works
The words “botulinum toxin” may sound scary, but these products are very safe and have been extensively tested for decades. Botulinum toxin injections are diluted and purified so as to lend a mild, temporary paralyzing effect to the facial muscles. This relaxes and limits the movements of facial muscles, which allows “dynamic” wrinkles (caused by repetitive facial movements) to ease and soften for a few months.
How They Are Injected
All three brands of botulinum toxin products are administered in the same way, with a simple inpatient injection process that typically allows patients to return to normal activities the same day. Though the treatments are simply injected into the affected area, the procedure requires a lot of skill from the person giving the injection in order to yield good results. Following the injection process, the results can take up to one week to appear, and will last for about 3-4 months on average.
Now that we’ve talked about the similarities between the brands, let’s move on to what makes them different from one another. Differences can be subtle, and you may find it hard to decide which brand is best for you. That’s where your dermatologist or plastic surgeon comes in–he or she can help you make that decision. Here’s the rundown on some of the factors that make each of these compounds unique:
The most common and well-known of the three formulas, Botox® has been around for over 30 years for medical use, and over a decade for cosmetic use. Today, it is a safe and effective treatment that was the most popular non-surgical cosmetic treatment in the country last year. Though it is the best-tested, tried-and-true, and recognized brand available, it can take a little longer to go into effect than Dysport, and, though it’s rare, some people can develop an immunity to it over time.
Introduced in 2009, Dysport was Botox’s first competitor in the U.S. It has been proven to be highly effective, and may even start working a little faster and last longer than Botox®, though these points are debated. Dysport does tend to spread a little more than Botox®, so it requires a different technique and tends to be better for larger areas, such as the forehead. Dysport also costs less per unit than Botox® and can be used to try to get results in patients who have developed a Botox® immunity.
The new kid on the block,Xeomin came along in 2010, a year after Dysport. It is a stripped down “naked” compound with no protective proteins or other additives. Because of this, it is less likely to cause allergies or develop immunity issues that Botox® sometimes does. Other than that, Xeomin results are very similar to those of Botox®. The drug can cost a little less than Botox®.
Overwhelmed by the choices? Not sure what to pick? If you’re interested in getting botulinum toxin injections, then you’ll want to seek advice from a seasoned provider who is highly experienced with the uses and quirks of each brand’s formula. Each brand requires a different injection method, and your provider should have enough familiarity with each to give you advice on which is the best choice for you, as well as be able to give you good results. Every patient is unique, and some formulas may be more suited to your needs than others.
